A Thorough Review of Kindle 3

If you haven’t seen

or at least heard of the best, most popular, highest selling gadget Amazon has brought out in years – you must be living in Mars. The most wicked, coolest, craziest craze before the Ipad.

The amazing new generation Kindle readers from Amazon.

Highly authentic. Very original. The simple but techno presentation of the size and form itself is pretty much desirable. While we had a fondness for the original’s somewhat crazy sense of style, the second and third generations are far more streamlined. The 6-inch E Ink screen is the same size as the previous model, though Amazon says it’s got a faster refresh rate and better contrast ratio (more on that below). The 21 percent decrease in size and 15 percent reduction in weight should be a checklist buy-in.

The new Kindle is seriously light,

and it’s certainly now approaching the size of a mass market paperback — and, in our opinion, as long as we don’t lose screen real estate, the smaller and more portable, the better. Amazon’s rubberized the back of the device and that, coupled with the downsizing, makes it extremely comfortable to hold in your hand.

When you had your first Kindle,

you can say it is extremely fulfilling. I would still be convinced that it will serve my hunger for reading for quite a long time. I am happy using it as it is – or it was. It will still be a special gadget for me for a couple of years down the drain – unless I completely break it. In plenty of ways that matter, however, Amazon’s made tweaks. First off, the company has ditched the top row of keys for numbers, obviously because of the smaller amount of space the device is working with. This isn’t necessarily a good thing, but it’s not really bad, either — for instance, when entering a password into the experimental web browser, it took a minute for us to realize that what we were looking for wasn’t there — and that the numbers are now housed in the symbol menu.

Regardless, it’s so minor that most new users will never notice the disappearance.

The rocker has been changed so that it’s now almost completely flush with the face of the device, which is an improvement for stowing it away, and gives it a nicer overall look. In use, it does take some adjustment getting used to it, but it’s much smoother than the previous iteration and seems to be a good update.

Making changes

– or should I rather say – improvements – to an existing product makes it all worthwhile choice for the end-user. Amazon’s also rather inexplicably moved the sliding power button from the top left of the device to the bottom of the unit, along with the volume button and the headphone jack. Honestly, these decisions probably make no real difference and are just minor things to adjust to — though the headphone jack makes more sense in its new placement. This is something a new owner would not notice and a good test of acceptability.

One thing to notice

when you are used to using the older generation Kindles is that changes, either significant or just a small ramification, are really, if not sometimes, uncomfortable. Well – at first. The side buttons on both sides of the device have changed and this is one update we’re not that keen on. They feel a bit ‘mushier’ now, and if you’re not looking (as we’re often not when reading), it’s easy to miss the keys. While the bottom forward arrowed buttons have been enlarged, the back arrows are now smaller — a feature we agree with, but, as we said, overall, we’re not a fan of how easily you can miss the buttons completely when trying to press them.

Still, this is definitely the sleekest Kindle yet,

and we seriously love the look graphite gray review unit we were provided with.

Other key changes Amazon’s made to the Kindle

include the doublling of storage up to 4GB from 2GB, and the company also claims to have doubled the battery life from two weeks to four (that’s with the wireless off, of course). With the new capacity you can squeeze around 3,500 books onto one of these now, and while we did not test Amazon’s battery life claim (because we haven’t had it nearly long enough), trust me when I say the battery should rarely be an issue with one of these.

You might be thinking

– why make alterations on a working model? Would suit naysayers wouldn’t it? Well – it (still) reads just like a Kindle(!). Yes, the page refreshes slightly faster, but it’s barely perceptible in comparison with the Kindle 2, and it’s still a very E Ink experience… probably because of the tried and tested E Ink screen.

What is noticeably more impressive is the contrast ratio…

this thing is incredibly sharp, and presumably it boasts the same quality E Ink screen that the newest DX packs, as that one also impressed me. The display will still be a marvel for me compared to any or all e-book readers out there.

I can say the foregoing

are enough to convince me it is a good buy. You can never have the same doubts as to its usefulness as when the first Kindle came out. There are a few other notable new features — mostly that new, experimental Webkit browser. In our experience with it, it’s called experimental for a reason, and we can’t really imaging using it on a regular basis, but we do get a kick out of seeing the internet in glorious grayscale. For reading purposes, this is not an issue at all (for me that is). Reading any normal hardbound hardcopy book always comes in black font most if not always. So colourful screen will not become a deterrent in making the choice to get one for yourself or give one to someone.

The 3G browsing experience

is (as expected) somewhat noticeably slower than the WiFi one, and while it’s obviously in its infancy, we expect Amazon will continue to improve the browser, and it far exceeds the previous one in terms of quality. Other additions include native support for PDF files, which some people will certainly be very happy about. I am just a bit stunned though to know that there is no support in Kindle 3 for the EPUB format.

It really depends

on how you accept or perceive change on something you have been familiar with or working with for quite sometime. A small change on the design might be a good modification for me but could present a discomfort on you or to someone else.

Amazon obviously thinks that it’s got a good thing going for itself,

and has made very few other changes. I could see that the touch and feel expectation when you first get a good grasp at its slender presentation is still awesomely satisfying. The new Kindle is extremely innovative, though we can get behind most of the updates its made. What’s clear, however, is that if you’re looking for a standalone e-reader (i.e., a portable replacement for physical books), this is the go-to, standard-setting device. It is the only thing you will ever need for your mobile library. While Barnes and Noble’s Nook is probably its main competitor, Amazon’s got the name in this category, and the new Kindle is lighter and thinner. Amazon’s worked out enough of the kinks that its third gen device seems pulled together well enough to seriously start appealing to an even wider audience than previously.

The two models

– a WiFi only version for $139 and a WiFi / 3G model for $189 — are competitively priced for the high quality of the device. Amazon still has given consumers the option to choose according to their requirement (or could be that they are narrowing people’s choices?!) At the end of the day, there are two paths a consumer can go down when buying a new reading device: the standalone reader or the do-it-all unit which also reads books. In the standalone category, the Kindle is probably the one to beat, and its support for the platform with apps for many devices are certainly helping it to flourish. We are still, however, not at all assured that the standalone path is the one most consumers will ultimately traverse. I will deal with this with a step back of caution.

Just as Apple’s iPod wasn’t the first MP3 player,

Amazon wasn’t the first company on the block to release an e-book reader–NuvoMedia’s RocketBook and the early Sony Readers all beat the Kindle to market. But it’s hard to argue that the online retailer’s Kindle isn’t the iPod of the e-book reader market.

The Kindle

has helped usher the e-book reader from gadget curiosity to a burgeoning mass-market device, all in less than three short years.

I have an iPad and a Kindle.

Why? Ipad 2 is for other things (playing, surfing the net, etc) but Kindle is for my ‘quiet, personal’ reading moments. I wouldn’t carry my iPad to read on it on a beach! A kindle is just so very perfect for that. Besides, an iPad requires to be charged more often while a kindle can last for weeks when the wireless connection is turned off. Can I propose now – the kindle will not be an excess gadget – it is a must have – more so when you have an iPad.

In summary:

The good:

Much slimmer, more compact homogenic design than the previous Kindle; greatly improved screen with higher contrast and noticeable faster page turns; still has the native PDF support; large resource library of hundreds of thousands of e-books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs via Amazon’s familiar online store; Wi-Fi access to Amazon’s online store; built-in keyboard for notes; shipped with 4GB (3.3 usable) of internal memory, it’s capable of storing 3,500 electronic books; eight fonts available to choose from, including two new extra-large sizes; excellent dependable battery life; ability to display image files, and plays MP3 and AAC audio.

The bad – err hang-ups:

No expansion slot for adding more memory; no support for EPUB book files; no protective carrying case included; battery is sealed into the device and is not removable.

The bottom line:

The latest generation of Kindle’s presentation of winning combination of noteworthy upgrades–an improved screen, longer battery life, lighter weight, and lower price–vaults it to the top of the e-book reader category. No matter how I look at it – it still is a definite good buy, worth the money – something that will never fade – as long as there are books to read and until people stop reading!

Give the gift of reading. Gift Kindle.
